(Boxer Indemnity).

1. I have the honour to refer Your

Excellency to the declaration made by the

British Government in December 1922, that the

balance of the British share of the Indemnity of

1901 would thenceforward be devoted to purposes

matumlly beneficial to China and Great Britain

and to express the hope that the British

Government will at once take steps to remit all

payments of the Indemity as from December 1st

1922 to the unfettered control of the National

Government of the Republic of China.

2. In the event of such remission being

effected, it is the intention of the Chinese

Government to create out of the said Indemnity

funds an endowment to be devoted to educational

purposes in harmony with the general views set

forth
